The application for the December 2009 日本語能力試験 or “The Japanese Language Proficiency Test” has been available at bookstores in Japan for a few weeks now. It costs ¥500 for the application pack which includes: ① Application Guide, ② Application Form, ③ Postal Payment Form, ④ Envelope for Application and ⑤ Special Advertising Issue. The official test date is Sunday, December 6th 2009.
The December 2009 test application period is from August 28th to October 2nd. In Japan, a payment of ¥5,500 needs to be made at a post office and the letter needs to be sent using registered mail. The December test is for all four of the current JLPT levels. In 2010, the test levels will be updated.
Good news! Some information was released in the guide book about the 2010 test. It looks like N5 is the current level 4. N4 is the current level 3, N3 is new and is a step between the current level 2 and 3. Level 2 and 1 stay the same. The document says: 「ほぼ同じレベル」 which means “about the same level” so we will have to wait for the official documentation to be published to be sure.
For those people that have taken the Summer 2009 test, they advise that you wait to get your results before applying for the winter test.
Good luck everyone!
みんなさん、がんばって!

I’m wondering if I will take a crack at it or not.
Anyone else doing it this year?
Anyone?
I was planning on taking the level 2 test but I think that I do not have enough time to get a proper study in. I will wait for the new test next year and take level 2 then!
How about you Native.English.Teacher?
Steve
Thanks for the reply Steve!
I’d like to take the test, but realistically I think I would be wasting my money. If I have time to study it means I’m neglecting something else.
If you are in Japan then the deadline is today! If you were planning on taking the test in December, I hope you signed up!
To everyone who signed up: Good luck! I hope you can pass it!
Steve
Did you sign up Steve?
No. I wanted to but I am in the same boat as you. If I take it, it means that I cant do something else. Too much to do, not enough time.
